For more information on each of these items listed click here.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 240° F
  2. While the oven is preheating break up your bud and spread it evenly in your pyrex dish. It doesn’t need to be powder fine but it should be broken up to expose as much surface area as possible

  1. Place your thermometer probe inside the pyrex dish, cover everything with foil and place in your preheated oven for 40 minutes at 240°

  1. Carefully (it will be hot) place your now decaboxylated bud into your mason jar
  2. Pour just enough grain alcohol into the mason jar to fully submerge the bud and firmly tighten the lid
  3. Shake mason jar and place it in crockpot

  1. Slow cook for 4 hrs at 130° F making sure to shake every 20-30 minutes.  VERY IMPORTANT: Alcohol fumes are flammable. Do not allow your mason jar to steam or boil too much.

  1. Strain your mixture by layering cheese cloth in a strainer and pouring it through

  1. Fill your tincture bottles

  1. Optional: Label your tincture bottles with things like date, strain name, solvent, etc.
  2. Enjoy! Check dosing calculator below to dial it in 🙂

Not all slow cookers are created equal. This is by far one of THE BEST slow cookers for edibles and extracts and here's why.

1. This slow cooker comes with a temperature probe and temperature settings as low as 100°. Perfect because we need gentle temperatures in order to work with cannabinoids and terpenes and we need to monitor them closely. The slow cooker will calibrate itself and ensure to maintain your target temperature.

2. You can also set a timer on this crockpot so that once your desired temperature is reached it will then start counting down. It also automatically shuts off once the timer ends and then starts counting up so you know how long ago it went it off.

3. It's 7 quarts which is large enough for cannabutter recipes because you can fit more water/volume than a typical 6 quart cooker.

4. Can't beat the price and oh yeah... It makes amazing food too 🙂

Any oven safe pyrex bakeware should do. Pyrex because it can withstand heat and material will stick less to it. Some come with oven safe lids (we just use foil) and they also come in different sizes and shapes. Choose what best meets your needs and preference.

I use 16 oz, wide mouth mason jars. To put things in perspective 1 cup equals 8 fl oz, so these can yield up to 2 cups each at a time. And I use wide mouth because that makes them more versatile for other common uses but if all you care about is tinctures then any style mouth will do. You can usually get them in packs of 6, 12 or more and they also come in different sizes.

I use an oven thermometer with probe mainly when decarboxylating in the oven. Ovens range and fluctuate in temperature far more than you would believe. Using an oven thermometer with a probe while decarboxylating helps us narrow in on the precise and gentle temperatures we need to efficiently and successfully decarboxylate flower. It also serves as a double check when using the slow cooker mentioned above.

This and the following 2 items are simply preference. When making tinctures it's pretty widely agreed upon that high proof grain alcohol is going to work best. The most popular example would be Everclear but that can be difficult to find or even too expensive in some areas. I personally was fortunate enough to have a liquor store nearby that has a store brand equivalent for 1/3 the price. The higher the proof the better.

Since this is alcohol it may not be the best option for some. The following 2 options can be used instead of alcohol if you prefer.

Since alcohol isn't going to be a good option for everyone another very efficient solvent for tinctures/extracts is MCT oil. We have an entire article that goes over what MCT oil is, its health benefits and the advantages of using it in tinctures which you can read here. Basically it extracts well, is extremely bio available and is also keto friendly. So if you're looking to avoid alcohol and keep sugars low this is a solid choice. Different brands of MCT oil come from different sources. We only use organic MCT oil sourced from coconuts.

Again, when making tinctures you can choose what you wish to extract with. Since the alcohol mentioned above won't be good for everyone another viable option is FOOD GRADE vegetable glycerin. Always make sure you're using FOOD GRADE vegetable glycerin if you choose this option. Unlike MCT oil, vegetable glycerin has no fat and a lot of carbs/sugar. This means your finished product will be sweet relative to the previous 2 options and glucose sensitive people should keep this in mind.

Cheesecloth is used for straining. Coffee filters aren't as effective with thicker solvents like oil or glycerin.

Tincture bottles to store your finished product. These should come with droppers and amber is the best color to get. Air, light and many other factors can degrade the quality of your tincture. Proper storage ensures quality and consistency. You will also see these bottles in many other colors but amber is best.

They're usually sold in packs of 12 or more and they come in various sizes. We use 1 and 2 fl oz bottles but be sure to buy whatever will meet your needs best.
