How Long Do Shrooms Stay In Your System?

So you’re wondering how long magic mushrooms stay in your system… for science of course.  Well that can vary but also it sounds like you’re really asking a few questions:

1. How long will a dose last?
2. How long are magic mushrooms actually detectable?
3. How soon can you can pass a drug test after consuming magic mushies?

Well the answer to all 3 questions can vary. It gets complicated considering shroom potency, harvesting technique, storage conditions, amount consumed, consumption frequency, individual metabolism, medical history, genetics and of course, testing conditions.  All that being said these are the facts.

How long will a dose last?

Considering all the varying factors we just discussed a microdose or trip lasts between 4-8 hrs usually with a complete rebound within about 24 hrs. Some good rest and hydration would be important of course.

How Long are Shrooms Detectable?

How long shrooms are actually detectable really depends on the testing method. There are very fancy tests out there that cost a lot of money. They can actually check hair and nail for psilocin, a more stable, longer lasting metabolite of psilocybin.  In theory it’s detectable for approximately 90 days and there’s evidence that shows it’s more preserved in melanin or darker colored hair.  So people with lighter colored hair have a higher chance of passing a hair/nail test sooner.^[1]

Hair and nail tests usually have the longest detection windows but what about blood tests? A drug’s half-life is the amount of time it takes for half of the dose to be processed out of the body. Psilocybin has an elimination half-life of 160 minutes in the blood, and psilocin has an elimination half-life of 50 minutes in the blood. On average, more than 95 percent of psilocybin leaves the body after about 13 hours. More than 95 percent of psilocin leaves the body after about 4 hours.

Urinalysis tests also have smaller detection windows with 24 hrs usually being plenty of time to rid the bladder of psilocybin and any of its metabolites.  Saliva tests have similarly short detection windows which brings us to the final question. So how soon can someone pass a drug test after consuming magic mushrooms?

The most common urine and saliva drug tests such as pre-employment drug tests are 5 panel drug tests.  They test for THC, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines and PCP.  Psilocybin and psilocin are rarely ever tested for and it’s also fair to note there are other hallucinogenic mushrooms and plants that have completely different active chemicals that are almost never tested for as well and aren’t even illegal.  So chances are as long as you’re not a professional athlete or otherwise subject to extremely stringent testing you could probably pass drug test while actually consuming shrooms. They’re just not being checked for in most cases.
